I chose this photograph for my last blog because it is my favorite picture that I have come across thus far. It is a great picture of a smiling baby all bundled up. The photographer of this picture caught true happiness on the face of its subject. This joy and happiness shown of the face of the baby is passed on to the viewer. The background of the photograph is great because it is very plain and simple, since the child’s bunches of clothing is very colorful and vibrant.

This photograph of an individual walking in the sand, leaving footprints is a pensive one. It is very unique because one can see the footprints in the sand fairly clearly, but the feet and legs in the background at the top are out of focus. The angle the photo is taken at causes the viewers eyes to follow the picture from the bottom up–a wonderful, creative, and smart technique.

I chose this photograph of a woman with bound feet because it gives you insight into the Chinese culture. It is very important to not get caught up in our own world in the United States, but instead to reach out to know and understand different cultures throughout the world. This photograph is taken very well by the photographer because it is taken at a unique angle that the average person would think to take it at. It does well at showing and featuring the foot of the woman, which is the main subject of the photograph.

At this time of the year (December) almost everyone enjoys looking at a photograph such as this one because it looks very warm and tropical. This photo, ironically was taken in Asia in the during the winter season! Sometimes I wish our winters looked like this… The one characteristic of this photograph that caught me (besides the warm weather I envy) was the dock in the very center of the picture. I really like how the photograph shows off the length of the dock from the angle the photo was taken at. Again the leading lines in the photograph grab our eyes attention as a viewer. The photograph gives off a really cool effect as the dock out into the ocean starts large, and then ends really small as it hits the island. The photographer did a good job at choosing proportionally how much ocean, land, and sky to have shown in his piece.

Mother and Child

I love this photograph of a mother doing her daily work with her child strapped safely to its’ mother’s back. The photograph is set up very well because it is centered, involving most of the mother’s body, but shows the baby in the upper right-hand corner as well. The fine line in the mother’s back leads the viewer’s eye from her child on her back to her head/face while she works in the water. We cannot see what she is doing, but that is not the reason of taking the photograph. The reason of taking the photograph is to capture the child on the mother’s back. The relationship between a mother and child and shown in this piece, and if the photograph was taken differently, it would probably tell a different story.

This photograph isn’t necessarily a really “good” photograph according to today’s standards with all of the new high technology, but what I really enjoyed about this photograph was it’s sense of timelessness. Nothing in this photograph gives away information on where they are exactly, or what year it is even. The two silhouettes of the men, one portaging a canoe, and the other holding fishing poles, make this photograph appear this way. If the viewer was able to clearly and distinctly see their faces and outfits, I think that the photograph would be perceived very differently. The unclarity of the photograph gives the feel of timelessness to it as well, making it maybe not the best piece of photograph today, but still an interesting beneficial piece in its own way.

There are a couple of characteristics of this photograph of a man camping that I really enjoyed. First is the angle from which the photograph was taken from. The photographer got down level with the man sitting by the fire, and took more of a side profile shot rather than what most people would have done, and that is take the photograph from straight on. I like the fact that this photo is a candid shot, not one where the man is looking directly at the camera, but instead he is caught in the action of his everyday actions out on trail. I also really liked how the photographer placed the man on the right side of the frame leading our eyes, as a viewer, to look to the left because that is the direction of his face. This placement is appealing to any viewer’s eyes.

This is a close up photograph, in which the focus of the piece engulfs the entire frame. Photography such as this can be confusing because there is no background to base off of, but it can be very interesting and enjoyable to look at as well, as this photograph is. The photographer captured a piece with many different colors for the eye to enjoy. Though the colors are different, they all fit into the same Thanksgiving holiday color theme. The objects in the photo are not arranged perfectly, which is a really good thing, or else the photograph would look too organized and orderly. The randomness of the photograph is what makes it a good one.

The first characteristic of this photograph that drew me, as a viewer, to it was its sense of warmth. The softly glowing lights, along with the golden colors of both the ornaments and the wrapping paper on the presents creates a happy, relaxing environment in the setting. Once one looks past this though, I thought it was a unique idea of the photographer’s to only photograph half of the Christmas tree in his frame. I don’t think that photograph would have been as good, or have the same effect if the tree was just plain and simple in the middle of the frame. Having half of the tree showing can be appealing to the eye, while it shows some of the home background that is in place.

This photograph has one of the qualities that I mentioned in the post from yesterday. This very important characteristic of a photograph is having some sort of “leading lines” that lead the viewers eyes across the picture. In this photograph the leading line in this case is the glowing road from all of the cars on the street from the bottom of the photograph to the upper middle portion. The angle that the photographer took this picture from in Las Vegas, Nevada made this street transform into a wonderful leading line for this instance.
